Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; N.L. pref. desulfo-, desulfuricating (prefix used to characterize a dissimilatory sulfate-reducing procaryote); N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), berry, coccus; N.L. masc. n. Desulfococcus, a berry shaped (spherical) sulfate-reducer.
