Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; L. fem. n. luna, the figure of a half-moon, a crescent, lune; N.L. fem. n. Desulfoluna, a sulfate-reducing crescent.

Desulfoluna spongiiphila Ahn et al. 2009, sp. nov.

Etymology: L. n. spongia, sponge; N.L. fem. adj. phila (from Gr. fem. adj. philê), friend, loving; N.L. fem. adj. spongiiphila, friendly to/living within a sponge.
