Desulfurolobus Zillig and Böck 1987, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Desulfurolobus ambivalens Zillig et al. 1987.
Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; L. masc. n. globus, a round body, a ball, sphere, globe; N.L. masc. n. Desulfuroglobus, a sphere that reduces sulfur compounds.

Note: Fuchs et al. 1996 propose to transfer ¤ Desulfurolobus ambivalens Zillig et al. 1987 (the type species of the genus Desulfurolobus) to the genus ¤ Acidianus as ¤ Acidianus ambivalens (Zillig and Böck 1987) Fuchs et al. 1996, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Desulfurolobus to ¤ Acidianus.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. ambo ambae, both; L. part. adj. valens, being able to do; N.L. part. adj. ambivalens, ambivalent.
