Type species: ¤ Diaphorobacter nitroreducens Khan and Hiraishi 2003.
Etymology: Gr. adj. diaphoros, different, and, in good sense, advantageous, profitable, important; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Diaphorobacter, profitable rod, referring to usefulness in nitrogen removal.

Etymology: N.L. n. nitras -atis, nitrate; N.L. pref. nitro-, pertaining to nitrate; L. part. adj. reducens, leading back, bringing back and, in chemistry, converting to a different oxidation state; N.L. part. adj. nitroreducens, reducing nitrate.

Etymology: L. gen. n. oryzae, of rice, referring to the rice-paddy fields from where the type strain was isolated.
