Entomoplasma Tully et al. 1993, gen. nov. (Type genus of the order ¤ Entomoplasmatales Tully et al. 1993; type genus of the family ¤ Entomoplasmataceae Tully et al. 1993).
Type species: ¤ Entomoplasma ellychniae (Tully et al. 1989) Tully et al. 1993.
Etymology: Gr. n. entomon, insect; Gr. neut. n. plasma, something formed or molded, a form, an image; N.L. neut. n. Entomoplasma, intended to mean associated with insects.

Etymology: N.L. n. Ellychnia, a genus of firefly beetles; N.L. gen. n. ellychniae, of Ellychnia, from which the organism was first isolated.
