Type species: ¤ Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (Hauduroy et al. 1937) Duncan et al. 2002.
Etymology: N.L. adj. faecalis (from L. n. faex faecis), pertaining to feces; L. neut. n. bacterium, a small rod; N.L. neut. n. Faecalibacterium, rod from feces, as this bacterium is abundant in feces, with the colon its presumed habitat.

Other synonyms: "Bacillus mucosus anaerobius" Prausnitz 1922, "Bacteroides praussnitzii" (sic) Hauduroy et al. 1937.
Etymology: N.L. gen. n. prausnitzii, of Prausnitz; named for C. Prausnitz, the bacteriologist who first isolated this organism.
