Type species: ¤ Frateuria aurantia (ex Kondô and Ameyama 1958) Swings et al. 1980.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Frateuria, named after Joseph Frateur (1903-1974), eminent Belgian microbiologist.

Frateuria aurantia (ex Kondô and Ameyama 1958) Swings et al. 1980, nom. rev., comb. nov. (Type species of the genus).

Synonym: "Acetobacter aurantium" (sic) Kondô and Ameyama 1958.
Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. aurantia (from L. v. auro, to overlay with gold), gold colored, refers to the gold-yellow color of the strains on MYP agar.
