Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Gelria, Gelre or Gelderland, one of the 12 provinces in The Netherlands, in which Wageningen is located.

Gelria glutamica Plugge et al. 2002, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).

Etymology: N.L. n. acidum glutamicum, glutamic acid; L. fem. suff. -ica, suffix used with the sense of pertaining to; N.L. fem. adj. glutamica, referring to glutamic acid, on which the bacterium grows.
