Etymology: Gr. n. haima -atos (Latin transliteration haema -atos), blood; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Haematobacter, rod from blood.

Basonym: ¤ Rhodobacter massiliensis Greub and Raoult 2006.
Etymology: L. masc. adj. massiliensis, pertaining to Massilia (Roman name for Marseille) where the type strain was isolated.
