Type species: ¤ Halarchaeum acidiphilum Minegishi et al. 2010.
Etymology: Gr. n. hals halos, salt, salt water; N.L. neut. n. archaeum (from Gr. adj. archaios -ê -on, ancient), ancient one, archaeon; N.L. neut. n. Halarchaeum, a saline archaeon.

Etymology: N.L. neut. n. acidum (from L. adj. acidus, sour), an acid; N.L. adj. philus -a -um (from Gr. adj. philos -ê -on), friend, loving; N.L. neut. adj. acidiphilum, acid-loving.
