Type species: ¤ Halocella cellulosilytica corrig. Simankova et al. 1994.
Etymology: Gr. n. hals halos, salt; L. fem. n. cella, a store-room and in biology a cell; N.L. fem. n. Halocella, salt cell.

Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain Z-10151 = ATCC 700086 = DSM 7362.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: X89072.
Etymology: N.L. n. cellulosum, cellulose; N.L. fem. adj. lytica (from Gr. fem. adj. lutikê), able to loose, able to dissolve; N.L. fem. adj. cellulosilytica, organism which dissolves cellulose.
