Halomebacteria Cavalier-Smith 2002, class. nov.
Type order: ¤ Halobacteriales Grant and Larsen 1989.
Etymology: Gr. n. hals halos, salt; me-, common scientific abbreviation for methane; Gr. n. baktêria, staff, cane; suff. -ia, ending proposed by Gibbons and Murray and by Stackebrandt et al. to denote a class; N.L. neut. pl. n. Halomebacteria, a class which comprises both halophiles and somewhat halophilic methanogen.
