Etymology: Gr. n. hals halos, salt; Gr. n. theion (Latin transliteration thium), sulfur; L. masc. n. bacillus, a small rod; N.L. masc. n. Halothiobacillus, salt-loving sulfur rodlet.

Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. kellyi, of Kelly; named after Donovan P. Kelly, a British microbiologist who has made important contributions to research on sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and their physiology.

Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. neapolitanus, Neapolitan; pertaining to the seawater at Naples from which this species was probably first isolated by Nathansohn in 1902.
