Type species: ¤ Hoyosella altamirensis Jurado et al. 2009.
Etymology: N.L. fem. dim. n. Hoyosella, named in honour of Dr Manuel Hoyos, a pioneer in research towards the protection of the Altamira Cave paintings.

Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. altamirensis, referring to Altamira Cave (Cantabria, Spain), where the type strain was isolated.
