Type species: ¤ Isochromatium buderi (Trüper and Jannasch 1968) Imhoff et al. 1998.

Etymology: Gr. adj. isos, equal, like, similar; N.L. neut. n. Chromatium, a genus name; N.L. neut. n. Isochromatium, the similar Chromatium, the bacterium similar to Chromatium.

Etymology: N.L. gen. n. buderi, of Buder; named for J. Buder, a German plant physiologist.
