Type species: ¤ Kyrpidia tusciae (Bonjour and Aragno 1985) Klenk et al. 2012.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Kyrpidia, of Kyrpides, named in honor of Nikolaos C. Kyrpides, a Greek-American genomics scientist, who co-initiated the Genomic Encyclopedia of Archaea and Bacteria.

Etymology: L. gen. n. tusciae, referring to the Italian region of Tuscany, where all the organisms were isolated.
