Etymology: N.L. n. hydrogenum (from Gr. n. hudôr, water; and Gr. v. gennaô, to produce), hydrogen (that which produces water, so called because it forms water when exposed to oxygen); L. part. adj. tolerans, tolerating; N.L. part. adj. hydrogenitolerans, hydrogen-tolerating, referring to its ability to tolerate a high level of hydrogen in the headspace.
