Etymology: L. adj. meridianus, of or belonging to the south, southern, meridional; L. n. mare, the sea; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a rod; N.L. masc. n. Meridianimaribacter, a rod of the southern sea, isolated from the South China Sea.
