Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; Gr. n. hals halos, salt; N.L. masc. adj. philus (from Gr. masc. adj. philos), friend, loving; N.L. masc. n. Methanohalophilus, salt-loving methanogen.
