Type species: ¤ Methanolacinia paynteri (Rivard et al. 1984) Zellner et al. 1990.
Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. fem. n. lacinia, the lappet, flap, edge, or corner of a garment, a garment; N.L. fem. n. Methanolacinia, methane (-producing) garnment, to indicate the irregular shape of the organism.

Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. paynteri, of Paynter; named after M.J.B. Paynter, who first isolated a species of the genus Methanomicrobium.
