Type genus: ¤ Methanopyrus Kurr et al. 1992.
Etymology: N.L. masc. n. Methanopyrus, type genus of the order; suff. -ales, ending denoting an order; N.L. fem. pl. n. Methanopyrales, the Methanopyrus order.
