Type genus: ¤ Methanosarcina Kluyver and van Niel 1936 emend. Barker 1956 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Methanosarcina, type genus of the order; suff. -ales, ending denoting an order; N.L. fem. pl. n. Methanosarcinales, the Methanosarcina order.
