Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. fem. n. sphaera, a sphere; N.L. fem. n. Methanosphaera, methane-producing sphere.
