Methanothermus Stetter 1982, gen. nov. (Type genus of the family ¤ Methanothermaceae Stetter1982).
Type species: ¤ Methanothermus fervidus Stetter 1982.
Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; Gr. masc. adj. thermos, hot; N.L. masc. n. Methanothermus, methane- (producing) thermophile.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. fervidus, glowing hot, burning, fervent, because of its growth in almost-boiling water.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. sociabilis, that may be easily united or joined together, sociable, because of its growth in large aggregates.
