Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. masc. n. torris, a brand, firebrand; N.L. masc. n. Methanotorris, the methane-producer at fiery temperatures.

Etymology: N.L. neut. n. acidum formicicum, formic acid; L. masc. suffix -icus, suffix used with the sense of belonging to, pertaining to; N.L. masc. adj. formicicus, pertaining to formic acid.
