Journal of General Microbiology, 1966, 45, 253-273.]

Note: According to Simmon et al. 2009, except for the type strain, ATCC culture collection strains of Mycobacterium aurum are incorrectly annotated. The authors propose that the majority of Mycobacterium aurum strains belong to the Mycobacterium neoaurum-"Mycobacterium lacticola" relatedness group. These findings together with a review of isolates identified at two large reference laboratories suggest that Mycobacterium aurum is not a clinically significant isolate.

Note: According to Rules 27(3) and 30 [1], this new combination is not validly published because the effective publication only documents deposit of the type strain in a single recognized culture collection. However deposit in at least one other recognized culture collections in a different country is documented. In a Request for an Opinion, Euzéby and Tindall provide a solution whereby this name may be considered to be validly published [2].

Description of Mycobacterium massiliense sp. nov.
Mycobacterium massiliense (mas.si.li.en'se. L. neut. adj. massiliense, pertaing to Massilia, Latin name of Marseille, where the organism was isolated).
The strains are strictly aerobic, nonmotile, non-spore-forming, acid-fast, Gram-positive rods. The colonies on 5% sheep blood agar are nonphotochromogenic and intermediate between smooth and rough. Growth occurs between 2 and 4 days on 5% sheep blood agar, Middlebrook 7H10 agar, and LJ slants at between at 24 and 37 °C; no growth is observed at 42 and 45 °C. Both isolates grow at 30 °C on MacConkey agar without crystal violet and LJ slants containing 5% NaCl. Biochemical and susceptibility characteristics that differentiate the isolates from species of the Mycobacterium chelonae-Mycobacterium abscessus group are summarized in Tables 1 and 2 of the effective publication.
The type strain CIP 108297 (= CCUG 48898) was isolated from the sputum of a patient with hemoptoic pneumonia.
