2 The Subcommittee on the taxonomy of Mollicutes discussed the impact on the nomenclature of the Mollicutes of recent taxonomic studies on Mycoplasma mycoides indicating that it needed reclassification. Because Mycoplasma mycoides is the type species of the genus, any change in its name would have an impact on the names of all other organisms belonging to the genus, with noteworthy consequences on quarantine procedures and regulations. In order to avoid the social health issues that can arise following the renaming of regulated micro-organisms, a possible solution would be to define a new type species for the genus Mycoplasma. This option was discussed by the Subcommittee. Different opinions were expressed and no final recommendation was given.

Note: The transfer of ¤ Eperythrozoon coccoides (the type species of the genus ¤ Eperythrozoon) to the genus Mycoplasma means that the genera ¤ Eperythrozoon and Mycoplasma are heterotypic synonyms. Note: The Subcommittee on the taxonomy of Mollicutes discussed the impact on the nomenclature of the Mollicutes of recent taxonomic studies on Mycoplasma mycoides indicating that it needed reclassification. Because Mycoplasma mycoides is the type species of the genus, any change in its name would have an impact on the names of all other organisms belonging to the genus, with noteworthy consequences on quarantine procedures and regulations. In order to avoid the social health issues that can arise following the renaming of regulated micro-organisms, a possible solution would be to define a new type species for the genus Mycoplasma. This option was discussed by the Subcommittee. Different opinions were expressed and no final recommendation was given.

Note: In 2001, Neimark et al. proposed the transfer of Eperythrozoon wenyonii to the genus Mycoplasma with the Candidatus status, ¤ "Candidatus Mycoplasma wenyonii" Neimark et al. 2001. The Candidatus designation is for new, incompletely described taxa, in order to give them a provisional status; changing validly published names to Candidatus would lose their standing in nomenclature. So, Neimark et al. revise "Candidatus Mycoplasma wenyonii" to Mycoplasma wenyonii comb. nov.
