Type species: ¤ Nitrococcus mobilis Watson and Waterbury 1971 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: L. n. nitrum, native soda, natron, nitrate; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus, sphere; N.L. masc. n. Nitrococcus, nitrate sphere.
