Nitrosospira Winogradsky and Winogradsky 1933, genus.
Type species: ¤ Nitrosospira briensis Winogradsky and Winogradsky 1933 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: L. adj. nitrosus, full of natron; here intended to mean nitrous; L. fem. n. spira, a coil, spiral; N.L. fem. n. Nitrosospira, nitrous spiral.

Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. briensis, pertaining to Brie, a French place name.

Note: Winogradsky and Winogradsky (1933) described two species, Nitrosospira briensis and "Nitrosospira antarctica", but, their original laboratory cultures were never preserved [1, 2]. In 1980, only Nitrosospira briensis was recognized in the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names [3].
Although ATCC 25971 was proposed as neotype for Nitrosospira briensis in 1971 [4], the Approved Lists 1980 [3] cite the type strain as "no culture available", hence leaving this species without a designated type strain. Since the Approved Lists, no neotype strain has been proposed in the IJSB/IJSEM, in accordance with the Rule 18c.
