Nitrospina Watson and Waterbury 1971, genus. (Type genus of the family ¤ Nitrospinaceae Garrity et al. 2006).
Type species: ¤ Nitrospina gracilis Watson and Waterbury 1971 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. n. nitras -atis, nitrate; N.L. pref. nitro-, pertaining to nitrate; L. fem. n. spina, thorn, spine; N.L. fem. n. Nitrospina, nitrate spine.

Etymology: L. fem. adj. gracilis, thin, slender.

Note: A strain of Nitrospina gracilis, the strain 3/211 (obtained from Biozentrum Klein Flottbek,University of Hamburg) is available. However, the designation of this strain as the type strain of Nitrospina gracilis is not published in the IJSB/IJSEM (see Rule 18f). The GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the strain 3/211 is FR865038.
