Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Oerskovia, in honor of J. Ørskov who first described this organism.

Note: 16S rDNA analysis, DNA-DNA reassociation, riboprinting, peptidoglycan analysis and determination of phenotypic properties of various strain of ¤ Cellulomonas turbata (Erikson 1954) Stackebrandt et al. 1983 [basonym: ¤ Oerskovia turbata (Erikson 1954) Prauser et al. 1970 (Approved Lists 1980)] reveal that they form a cluster that can be distinguished unambiguously from other ¤ Cellulomonas species by morphology, amino acid composition of the cell wall and 16 rDNA signatures. As a result of this polyphasic study, it appears taxonomically reasonable to re-establish the genus Oerskovia.

Note: E. Stackebrandt et al. 1982 [1] proposed combining Oerskovia xanthineolytica, ¤ Brevibacterium fermentans, ¤ Brevibacterium lyticum, ¤ Nocardia cellulans, and ¤ Cellulomonas cartae in one species which was named ¤ Cellulomonas cartae Stackebrandt and Kandler 1980. The proposal to combine all five species under the name Cellulomonas cartae is not in accordance with the Bacteriological Code because the specific epithet cellulans in Nocardia cellulans Metcalf and Brown 1957 has priority over the specific epithet cartae in Cellulomonas cartae Stackebrandt and Kandler 1980 [Rules 38 and 42]. Therefore, the name of the taxon under which they are united is ¤ Cellulomonas cellulans (Metcalf and Brown 1957) Stackebrandt and Keddie 1988, comb. nov. [2, 3].
