Type species: ¤ Parvularcula bermudensis Cho and Giovannoni 2003.
Etymology: L. adj. parvulus, very small; L. fem. n. arcula, a jewel-casket; N.L. fem. n. Parvularcula, a very small jewel-casket.
Reference: CHO (J.C.) and GIOVANNONI (S.J.): Parvularcula bermudensis gen. nov., sp. nov., a marine bacterium that forms a deep branch in the α-Proteobacteria. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2003, 53, 1031-1036.

Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. bermudensis, from the Bermuda Islands, the geographical origin of the type strain of the species.

Parvularcula lutaonensis Arun et al. 2009, sp. nov.

Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. lutaonensis, pertaining to Lutao, a small volcanic island off the eastern coast of Taiwan.
