Type species: ¤ Pelagibaca bermudensis Cho and Giovannoni 2006.
Etymology: L. n. pelagus, the open sea, the ocean; L. fem. n. baca, berry, especially olive; N.L. fem. n. Pelagibaca, an olive-shaped bacterium of the open ocean.
