Note: The name Pirella is illegitimate because of precedence of the fungal genus Pirella Bainier 1883 [Rule 51b(4)]. Consequently, a new genus designation Pirellula has been proposed by Schlesner and Hirsch 1987.

Note: The name Pirella marina is illegitimate because of precedence of the fungal genus Pirella Bainier 1883 [Rule 51b(4)]. Consequently, a new species designation Pirellula marina (Schlesner 1987) Schlesner and Hirsch 1987, has been proposed by Schlesner and Hirsch 1987.

Pirella staleyi Schlesner and Hirsch 1984, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Note: The strain ATCC 27377 = DSM 6068 was previously the type strain of ¤ Pasteuria ramosa Metchnikoff 1888 (Approved Lists 1980). ---> ¤ Pirellula staleyi (Schlesner and Hirsch 1984) Schlesner and Hirsch 1987, comb. nov.
