Classification (Warning: see also the file "Classification of prokaryotes: Introduction").

Pirella Schlesner and Hirsch 1984, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Pirella staleyi Schlesner and Hirsch 1984.
Etymology: L. n. pirum, pear; L. fem. dim. ending -ella; N.L. fem. n. Pirella, a small pear, referring to the shape of the bacterium.
Reference: SCHLESNER (H.) and HIRSCH (P.): Assignment of ATCC 27377 to Pirella gen. nov. as Pirella staleyi comb. nov. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1984, 34, 492-495.

---> ¤ Pirellula Schlesner and Hirsch 1987, gen. nov.

Note: The name Pirella is illegitimate because of precedence of the fungal genus Pirella Bainier 1883 [Rule 51b(4)]. Consequently, a new genus designation Pirellula has been proposed by Schlesner and Hirsch 1987.
Reference: SCHLESNER (H.) and HIRSCH (P.): Rejection of the genus name Pirella for pear-shaped budding bacteria and proposal to create the genus Pirellula gen. nov. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1987, 37, 441.

GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: X62912.
Etymology: L. fem. adj. marina, of, or belonging to, the sea, marine.

Pirella staleyi Schlesner and Hirsch 1984, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain ATCC 27377 = DSM 6068.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: CP001848 (complete genome).
Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. staleyi, of Staley, named after James T. Staley, who isolated strain ATCC 27377, under the name Pasteuria ramosa.
Reference: SCHLESNER (H.) and HIRSCH (P.): Assignment of ATCC 27377 to Pirella gen. nov. as Pirella staleyi comb. nov. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1984, 34, 492-495.

Note: The strain ATCC 27377 = DSM 6068 was previously the type strain of ¤ Pasteuria ramosa Metchnikoff 1888 (Approved Lists 1980).

---> ¤ Pirellula staleyi (Schlesner and Hirsch 1984) Schlesner and Hirsch 1987, comb. nov.
