Type species: ¤ Pirellula staleyi (Schlesner and Hirsch 1984) Schlesner and Hirsch 1987.
Illegitimate synonym: ¤ Pirella Schlesner and Hirsch 1984.
Etymology: L. n. pirum, pear; L. fem. dim. ending -ella; L. fem. dim. ending -ula; N.L. fem. n. Pirellula, very small pear, referring to the shape of the bacterium.
