Type genus: ¤ Planctomyces Gimesi 1924 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. masc. n. Planctomyces -etis, type genus of the family; L. suff. -aceae, ending to denote a family; N.L. fem. pl. n. Planctomycetaceae, the Planctomyces family.

The date of valid publication of this name is in fact that of the first citation in a Validation List (List n° 23, published 9 April 1987) [2].
