Etymology: N.L. n. porphyrinum (Gr. adj. porphureos, purple), porphyrine; N.L. pref. porphyro-, pertaining to porphyrine; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a rod; N.L. masc. n. Porphyrobacter, porphyrin-producing rod.
