2 Propionibacterium acnes (Gilchrist 1900) Douglas and Gunter 1946 (Approved Lists 1980) is an earlier synonym of "Corynebacterium parvum" Prévot 1940. According to Cummins and Johnson [1], the name "Corynebacterium parvum" has been used in immunological and oncological literature to describe the organism which has been extensively used as a reticulostimulant or immunomodulator. However an examination of 59 strains labeled "Corynebacterium parvum" [2] showed that 90% of them were Propionibacterium acnes by serological and physiological tests and by DNA homology, and almost all the remainder were ¤ Propionibacterium avidum (Eggerth 1935) Moore and Holdeman 1969 (Approved Lists 1980). "Corynebacterium parvum" is therefore regarded as a later synonym of Propionibacterium acnes.
