Type species: ¤ Propionigenium modestum Schink and Pfennig 1983.
Etymology: N.L. n. acidum propionicum, propionic acid; L. v. genere, to engender, produce; N.L. neut. n. Propionigenium, propionic acid maker.

Etymology: L. n. mare -is, the sea; L. gen. n. maris, of the sea, referring to the tidal mat flats from which this organism was isolated.
