Etymology: N.L. neut. n. proteinum, protein; N.L. adj. philus -a -um (from Gr. adj. philos -ê -on), friend, loving; N.L. neut. n. Proteiniphilum, protein loving.

Proteiniphilum acetatigenes Chen and Dong 2005, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).
