Rhizomonas van Bruggen et al. 1990, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Rhizomonas suberifaciens van Bruggen et al. 1990.
Etymology: Gr. n. rhiza, a root; Gr. fem. n. monas, a unit, monad; N.L. fem. n. Rhizomonas, a unit associated with roots.
Reference: VAN BRUGGEN (A.H.C.), JOCHIMSEN (K.N.) and BROWN (P.R.): Rhizomonas suberifaciens gen. nov., sp. nov., the causal agent of corky root of lettuce. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1990, 40, 175-188.

Notes:
1 The name Rhizomonas is illegitimate because it is a later homonym of a name of a taxon of protozoa (Rhizomonas Kent 1880). The name Rhizomonas has been placed in the list of "Rejected names of genera and subgenera of bacteria (nomina generum et subgenerum bacteriorum rejicienda)" by the Judicial Opinion 14.

2 Comparative analysis of 16s rDNA sequences suggests that the genus Rhizomonas van Bruggen et al. 1990 is synonymous with Sphingomonas Yabuuchi et al. 1990 and Rhizomonas has nomenclatural priority [Rule 24b (2)]. However, the name Rhizomonas is illegitimate (see: supra) and must not be used.

3 The type species of Rhizomonas van Bruggen et al. 1990 has been transferred to the genus ¤ Sphingomonas Yabuuchi et al. 1990. According to Rule 37a, the name Rhizomonas would have to be changed to Sphingomonas. However, Rhizomonas is not a correct name and reference to Sphingomonas is not requisite.
Rhizomonas suberifaciens van Bruggen et al. 1990, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain Ca1 = EY 2404 = ATCC 49355 = CIP 105429 = DSM 7465 = ICMP 12535 = IFO (now NBRC) 15211 = JCM 8521 = LMG 17323 = NCPPB 3629.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: D13737.
Etymology: L. n. suber -eris, cork; L. part. adj. faciens, making, producing; N.L. part. adj. suberifaciens, cork making.
Reference: VAN BRUGGEN (A.H.C.), JOCHIMSEN (K.N.) and BROWN (P.R.): Rhizomonas suberifaciens gen. nov., sp. nov., the causal agent of corky root of lettuce. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1990, 40, 175-188.

Note: The name Rhizomonas suberifaciens van Bruggen et al. 1990 is illegitimate because it is placed in an illegitimate genus (see: ¤ Rhizomonas).
---> ¤ Sphingomonas suberifaciens Yabuuchi et al. 1999, comb. nov.
Note: The name Rhizomonas suberifaciens van Bruggen et al. 1990 is illegitimate because it is placed in an illegitimate genus (see: ¤ Rhizomonas). However, according to Rule 32b, the specific epithet (suberifaciens) is not rendered illegitimate. So, the combination ¤ Sphingomonas suberifaciens is a correct name and must be used because it is the single legitimate, validly published name.
