Type genus: ¤ Rhodobacter Imhoff et al. 1984.
Etymology: N.L. masc. n. Rhodobacter, type genus of the family; suff. -aceae, ending to denote family; N.L. fem. pl. n. Rhodobacteraceae, the Rhodobacter family.

Note: According to Rule 51b (1), the family name Rhodobacteraceae Garrity et al. 2006 is illegitimate because the family contains the genus Hyphomonas (ex Pongratz 1957) Moore et al. 1984 which is the type of the family Hyphomonadaceae Lee et al. 2005.
