Type species: ¤ Rhodopila globiformis (Pfennig 1974) Imhoff et al. 1984.

Etymology: Gr. n. rhodon, the rose; L. fem. n. pila, a ball or globe; N.L. fem. n. Rhodopila, red sphere.

Rhodopila globiformis (Pfennig 1974) Imhoff et al. 1984, comb. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain ATCC 35887 = DSM 161 = LMG 4312.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: D86513.
Basonym: ¤ Rhodopseudomonas globiformis Pfennig 1974 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: L. n. globus, ball, sphere, globe; L. adj. suffix -formis -is -e (from L. n. forma, figure, shape, appearance), -like, in the shape of; N.L. fem. adj. globiformis, sphere-shaped.
