Type species: ¤ Sharpea azabuensis Morita et al. 2008.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Sharpea, named in honour of Michaela E. Sharpe, for her considerable efforts in the development of evolutionary microbiology.
Reference: MORITA (H.), SHIRATORI (C.), MURAKAMI (M.), TAKAMI (H.), TOH (H.), KATO (Y.), NAKAJIMA (F.), TAKAGI (M.), AKITA (H.), MASAOKA (T.) and HATTORI (M.): Sharpea azabuensis gen. nov., sp. nov., a Gram-positive, strictly anaerobic bacterium isolated from the faeces of thoroughbred horses. Sharpea azabuensis Morita et al. 2008, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).
Type strain (see also StrainInfo.net): strain ST18 = DSM 18934 = JCM 14210.
GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number for the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the type strain: AB210824.
Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. azabuensis, arbitrary name referring to the fact that the study in which the species was described was supported by the Azabu 'Academic Frontier' Project for Private Universities: Matching Fund Subsidy.
