Sphaerobacter Demharter et al. 1989, gen. nov. (Type genus of the order ¤ Sphaerobacterales Stackebrandt et al. 1997; type genus of the family ¤ Sphaerobacteraceae Stackebrandt et al. 1997).
Type species: ¤ Sphaerobacter thermophilus Demharter et al. 1989.
Etymology: L. n. sphaera, sphere; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a rod; N.L. masc. n. Sphaerobacter, spherical rod (!), probably intended to mean spherical bacterium.

Etymology: Gr. n. thermê, heat; N.L. adj. philus -a -um (from Gr. adj. philos -ê -on), friend, loving; N.L. masc. adj. thermophilus, heat-loving.
