Type genus: ¤ Spirochaeta Ehrenberg 1835 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: N.L. neut. n. Spirochaeta, type genus of the family; L. suff. -aceae, ending to denote a family; N.L. fem. pl. n. Spirochaetaceae, the Spirochaeta family.
