Sporolactobacillus Kitahara and Suzuki 1963, genus. (Type genus of the family ¤ Sporolactobacillaceae Ludwig et al. 2010).
Type species: ¤ Sporolactobacillus inulinus (Kitahara and Suzuki 1963) Kitahara and Lai 1967.
Etymology: Gr. n. spora, seed; L. n. lac lactis, milk; L. dim. n. bacillus, a small rod; N.L. masc. n. Sporolactobacillus, sporing milk rodlet.

Note: Sporolactobacillus inulinus, the type species of the genus Sporolactobacillus, was originally named Sporolactobacillus (subgen. Lactobacillus) inulinus thus inadvertently reducing Lactobacillus to subgeneric rank. This presumably was a lapsus calami for Lactobacillus (subgen. Sporolactobacillus) inulinus. In subsequent papers Kitahara and co-workers referred to the organism as Sporolactobacillus inulinus, elevating Sporolactobacillus to generic rank. Kitahara and Toyota (1972) in a footnote state: "The name Sporolactobacillus is considered more appropriate to be raised to a genus of the familly Bacillaceae from a subgenus of the genus Lactobacillus ...". The Approved Lists of Bacterial Names cite Kitahara and Suzuki 1963 as the authors of the generic name and Kitahara and Lai 1967 as authors of the type species name.
