Stygiolobus Segerer et al. 1991, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Stygiolobus azoricus Segerer et al. 1991.
Etymology: L. adj. stygius, of the Styx, Stygian, of the lower world; L. masc. n. lobus, lobe; N.L. masc. n. Stygiolobus, lobed organism from Hades (its habitat was the gate to hell in Dante's Divina Commedia).
Reference: SEGERER (A.H.), TRINCONE (A.), GAHRTZ (M.) and STETTER (K.O.): Stygiolobus azoricus gen. nov., sp. nov. represents a novel genus of anaerobic, extremely thermoacidophilic archaebacteria of the order Sulfolobales. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1991, 41, 495-501.

Stygiolobus azoricus Segerer et al. 1991, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus).

Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. azoricus, from the Azores, referring to the place of isolation.
