Etymology: Gr. fem. n. thalassa, the sea; Gr. fem. n. spira, a spire; N.L. fem. n. Thalassospira, spiral-shaped organism from the sea.

Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. lucentensis, pertaining to Lucentum, the Latin name in Roman times for Alicante, a coastal town in the south-east of Spain, which is the nearest town to the site from which the isolate was retrieved.
