Etymology: Gr. adj. thermos, hot; N.L. masc. n. desulfatator, sulfate-reducer; N.L. masc. n. Thermodesulfatator, thermophile sulfate-reducer.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. atlanticus, Atlantic, from the Atlantic Ocean, referring to the site of isolation of the type strain.
